Trees Forever and Mayor Frank Cownie to Kick-Off Tree Planting in Des Moines Parks

(Des Moines, IA, October 10, 2005) Trees Forever in partnership with the City of Des Moines will kick-off a five-year initiative to plant trees in Des Moines public parks.

Together, Mayor Frank Cownie and Trees Forever President Shannon Ramsay will announce a new program, Trees Forever Parks & Neighbors(tm), on Saturday, October 29at 10 a.m. in Union Park. Replanting efforts in Des Moines parks and neighborhoods will serve as the pilot for this new Trees Forever program.
This kick-off planting is part of a nationwide celebration, National NeighborWoods Month, created to showcase the efforts of nonprofit tree-planting organizations like Trees Forever. The Union Park project is funded by Trees Forever with a grant from The Home Depot Foundation and the Alliance for Community Trees. The City of Des Moines is providing in-kind support to the project with site planning and preparation.
Immediately following the announcement, Mayor Cownie and Ms. Ramsay will join neighborhood leaders and residents, elected officials, and The Home Depot volunteers to plant a grove of 40 trees near the Union Park playground. A complimentary lunch for volunteers will follow.
The new Trees Forever Parks & Neighbors program is designed to help establish neighborhood “greening groups” across Iowa, Trees Forever’s goals are to help revitalize neighborhoods through long-term greening efforts. Neighborhood residents will be asked to volunteer with tree planting and care in their parks and to help local residents that need assistance. An adopt-a-tree program for residents will be part of the greening effort.
With assistance from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the City of Des Moines has completed plans to reforest six parks as the first phase in a replanting campaign. Thousands of new trees need to be planted throughout Des Moines parks and neighborhoods in the coming years, and Trees Forever has joined Mayor Cownie in a partnership to raise funds for long-term reforestation efforts. Major tree-planting is slated to begin in Des Moines next year.
