"Each
tree planted needs water and care for its entire life. It's worth
the work. Over its lifetime, that tree will pay you back in low
energy bills, higher property values, and cleaner air and water." Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
TreePeople
and Mayor Villaraigosa have teamed up with community groups,
businesses, and individuals to make Los Angeles cleaner,
greener, healthier, and more beautiful. That partnership is
in the form of a pledge of long-term stewardship to plant one
million trees, with a focus on the areas that need it the most. One
such area is the ports.
The
Los Angeles harbor communities have a sparser canopy of trees than
any other part of the city, and some of the worst quality air.
The
proposition: More leaves rustling in the wind = Cleaner wind. "We
will grow the ports, but grow them 'green.' said Mayor Villaraigosa.
The
San Pedro and Wilmington communities understand the importance of trees
and parks. TreePeople will launch their community greening
efforts by planting hundreds of trees at Harbor Regional Park, coupled
with training workshops to inspire community-led planting projects
through the harbor area. The parks will become the centers from
which the community forest can spread into the surrounding
neighborhoods. TreePeople seeks to inspire the people of Los Angeles to
take personal responsibility for the urban forest- educating, training,
and supporting them as they plant and care for trees.
