    Mayor Sketches Out "Greenprint" Vision

    Denver, CO (July 13, 2006)- Mayor Hickenlooper of Denver announced his goal to triple Denver's tree canopy from 6 percent to 18 percent tree cover by planting a million new trees over the next 20 years. This is part of an overall sustainability agenda that includes cutting water use, employing alternative fuels, and other tools. "Greenprint Denver," Hickenlooper said, will impact nearly every city department in an effort to make Denver more sustainable.


    Funding

    CommUnity Impact Grants & Store Giving and Support- Deadline: Rolling

    Grant requests for under $3,000 can now be made directly through The Home Depot and local stores of The Home Depot through CommUnity Impact Grants and Store Giving and Support.


    Research

    Trees- A Prospectus. This report provides a retrospective look at urban and community forestry since 1990, with a focus on the role of nonprofit organizations and community-based groups as key to regreening American cities.


    Events

    Leading from Within- October 19-22, 2006

    (Oregon, Ohio). The Institute for Conservation Leadership announces Leading From Within, two sessions of personal leadership growth and skill development. Leading From Within is a six-month program designed to strengthen participants' leadership skills and increase their effectiveness as leaders.


    Public Policy

    FY07 Forest Service Budget- Interior Appropriations Subcommittee

    Washington, DC (July 18, 2006)- The full Senate will soon vote on Appropriations for the Interior and Related Agencies. This bill includes the FY 2007 budget for the US Forest Service. Senate appropriators have budgeted $27.6 million for the Urban and Community Forestry Program.


    Success Story

    Trees Forever- Iowa's Living Roadways: Community Visioning

    (Marion, IA) Trees Forever helps small communities in Iowa envision and design community-wide landscape improvements that enhance transportation corridors. Since its inception in 1996, the program has assisted 113 small towns to create new visions for their communities and to encourage community interest in and support of environmental issues.
