    Local Tree Planting Captures National Attention

    Groups join forces for city tree planting at Ingersoll Park as part of the Trees Forever NeighborWoods initiative.

    Des Moines, IA (June 16, 2006)- Volunteers across Des Moines are planting trees in area neighborhoods and parks to beautify and revitalize the community through the Trees Forever NeighborWoods program.

    Want to recognize the leadership of young conservationists you know?

    Kids can receive a $500 grant to implement their project ideas. Winners get to participate in a three-day youth summit in Washington, DC in summer 2007 to brief policy makers.


    Research

    Homeowner's Guide to Sudden Oak Death. A plant disease commonly called Sudden Oak Death (SOD) continues to threaten coastal forests in California and Oregon. Though SOD is a forest disease, it is common in urban Wildland interface areas, so it presents many challenges for homeowners.

    Canadian Urban Forest Conference- October 11-13, 2006

    Public Policy

    Department of the Interior 2007 U&CF Budget

    The Senate Subcommittee for Interior Appropriations met Tuesday to mark up their version of the Forest Service budget. Early word is that the Senate provided $27,596,000 for the Urban and Community Forestry Program Budget in FY2007. That is above the President's request of $26.8 million, but below the FY2006 enacted budget of $28.9 million. The full Senate appropriations committee meeting is June 29th, so there may be minor changes or earmarks.


    Success Story

    Tree Trust- Partnership Building

    (St. Paul, MN) Tree Trust offers an education and outreach program with the Builders Association of Minnesota that provides technical assistance, workshops, and continuing education credits for best management practices in preserving, protecting, and replanting trees during land development and construction.
