First Annual Martin J. Chavez Tree Giveaway

Albuquerque, NM (March 10, 2007)- In June 2006, Mayor Chavez adopted the 2030 Challenge as a goal for Albuquerque. The Challenge stipulates that by the year 2030, Albuquerque will be carbon neutral. These trees will help the city reach that goal.

    Funding

GE Supports Youth and Healthy Living- Deadlines: various

The GE Healthcare Charitable Giving Program provides support to nonprofit organizations in the United States that focus on youth education and/or promote healthy lives. Grants target national and regional organizations, as well as local organizations in communities with company facilities.

    Research

Urban Tree Planting and Greenhouse Gas Reductions

By Greg McPherson, Ph.D., USDA Forest Service, Director, Center for Urban Forest Research.

Davis, CA (March 12, 2007)- Several stories have appeared recently in popular news outlets suggesting that trees are not a solution in the fight against global warming. These stories fail to capture the complexity of the role that city trees play in fighting global climate change. Trees reduce carbon dioxide in the air, thereby reducing the warming "greenhouse" effect of the gas, in two main ways.

    Events

National Healthy Schools Day- April 30, 2007

Every child in every school community should have an environmentally safe and healthy school that is clean and in good repair. Schools in poor condition on the outside often have indoor environmental problems that affect children's health and learning.

    Public Policy

Support the APHIS Budget for Eradication of Pests

Deadline for action is April 30, 2007.

Washington, DC (March 30, 2007)- Senator Durbin of Illinois has issued a bipartisan letter of support, cosigned by 23 other Senators, urging adequate funding for the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service to contain and eradicate exotic and invasive pests.

    Success Story

Campaign to Fund Community-Based Tree Plantings

(San Francisco, CA)- Friends of the Urban Forest successfully advocated to restore city funding for community-based tree plantings and maintenance. This advocacy effort involved educational meetings with politicians, government officials and the media as well as grassroots e-mails, letters and phone calls to local officials.
