    Trees are worth downtown's investment

The fact that "money doesn't grow on trees" does not mean downtowns should not invest in their trees. Actually, research indicates that what's good for the air and aesthetic environment of downtown is also good for the perception of downtown by its users. And positive outlooks tend to be accompanied by positive cash flows. The fact is that people prefer having trees in streetscapes.

    Events

ACT Annual Meeting and Partners in Community Forestry Conference- Nov. 13-16

ACT's Annual Meeting will be held November 13 in Baltimore in conjunction with the Partners in Community Forestry Conference November 14-16. The agenda features trees as a tool for community revitalization, nonprofit executive networking, grassroots program models and volunteer success stories, and National NeighborWoods Program tools for community organizing. ACT's meeting is a great way to energize and connect with community organizers working to restore tree canopy in cities across the nation.

    Public Policy

Energy Bill Adopted by House Without Trees Provision

Washington, DC (August 4, 2007)- The House passed a wide-ranging energy bill on Saturday that will require most utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar power. President Bush has vowed to veto the energy bill because it does nothing to encourage increased domestic production of oil and gas. The Energy Efficiency Through Trees legislation crafted by Rep. Doris O. Matsui was not introduced.

    Success Story

    Neighborhood Trees Program

(Portland, OR)- Friends of Trees operates an extensive volunteer network that mobilizes approximately 2,000 people annually to plant and care for nearly 20,000 trees and shrubs in the Portland-Vancouver area. One such opportunity is the Neighborhood Trees Program. Developed over the last 15 years, this effort offers volunteer opportunities at numerous skill- and time-commitment levels.
