New Portland Study Shows Value of Tree Work
Portland, OR (November 20, 2007)- The figures are impressive. It would cost at least $5 billion to replace Portland's trees. Meanwhile, by trapping rainwater on their leaves and keeping it from carrying pollutants down drains and into streams, Portland trees save the city $11 million in storm water management costs each year.

 

   
 


SUCCESS STORY
Notable Trees of Tennessee Traveling Photography Exhibit
(Nashville, TN)- The Tennessee Urban Forestry Council (TUFC) has created a traveling exhibit that features photographs of 36 notable Tennessee trees plus a narrative panel. The display showcases trees from the TUFC Landmark and Historic Tree Register and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry Champion Tree Program.

 


     
 


RESEARCH
Urban Trees Contribute to Economic Activity
Many recent studies document the environmental service value that trees provide, but the value of urban forestry can also be measured in impact as an economic sector. A new national study accounts for the impact of green industry to the US economy, and reveals that tree production and tree care amounts to $21 billion in annual output.

PUBLIC POLICY
UCF Budget Projected at $27.7 million
Washington, DC (December 16, 2007)- Congress announced details of an end of year combined appropriations act for FY 2008 to fund all federal agencies that have been operating under continuing resolutions since the fall. Many programs did not receive as much funding as was initially budgeted by the House and Senate during the summer. However, if approved, the omnibus would provide more funding to environmental programs than the President's 2008 budget would have provided.

FUNDING
2008 Global ReLeaf Tree Planting Grants- Deadline: Jan.15
Global ReLeaf, a program of American Forests, is offering annual grants towards tree planting projects. The Global ReLeaf grant program provides private dollars to support local reforestation efforts and help match other funding sources.
