    Do Trees Make It OK to Drive an SUV?

    Albany (May 28, 2007)- If you plant some trees, is it OK to drive an Escalade? The question isn't as silly as it sounds. People worried about global warming increasingly are trying to "offset" the carbon dioxide- the leading greenhouse gas- they spew into the atmosphere when they drive, fly or flick on a light. One idea popular with the eco-conscious is to have trees planted for them.


    Funding

    Captain Planet Youth-Oriented Projects- Deadline: June 30

    The Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications for its second round of 2007 funding. The Foundation is interested in funding innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work to solve environmental problems in their communities. Grants ranging from $250 and $2,500.


    Research

    Trees = Less Stress and Faster Surgery Recovery

    In 1984, Roger Ulrich completed the best-known and most thorough study linking views of nature to hospital recovery. Records on recovery after cholecystectomy of patients in a suburban Pennsylvania hospital between 1972 and 1981 were examined to determine whether assignment to a room with a window view of a natural setting might have restorative influences.

    Nonprofits spend millions of dollars each year on executive search firms and talent scouts looking for new leadership. With more than 65% of nonprofit leaders saying they intend to leave their jobs between 2005 to 2010 and fewer entrants. LISC presents a step-by-step guide for how to plan for and artfully manage your executive transition.


    Public Policy

    House Subcommittee Boosts U&CF FY08 Budget

    Washington, DC (May 23, 2007) - House appropriators approved the fiscal 2008 budget for Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies in a voice vote today. The measure provides $2.6 billion for the USDA Forest Service, including a $31.1 million budget item for the Urban and Community Forestry Program.


    Success Story

    Youth Tree Care Program

    (San Francisco, CA)- Friends of the Urban Forest, in conjunction with three other local nonprofits, operates a youth program that takes care of 1,500 trees and assists in the planting of 200 trees each year. Youth employees, aged 14-17, earn a living wage and develop marketable job skills while improving San Francisco's urban environment.
