    Shade 2007

    Decatur, GA (February 2007)- The Georgia Urban Forest Council (GUFC) has released their latest edition of SHADE, a publication that helps communities. The current issue features the theme, "Weather the Storms and Manage the Challenges of the Urban Forest."


    Funding

    Staples Foundation Targets Education for Disadvantaged Youth- Deadline: April 6, 2007 

    The mission of the Staples Foundation for Learning is to fund programs that provide job skills and/or education for all people, with special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. Guided by this mission, the Foundation seeks to support causes that teach, train, and inspire people from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. 


    Research

    SmartGrowth for Clean Water

    The National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals, Trust for Public Land, and ERG put out a study in 2003 to help communities address the water quality impacts of sprawl. Their findings reinforce the value of trees and links between urban forestry and stormwater management.


    Events

    National Environmental Education Week- April 15-22

    National Environmental Education Week (NEEW) is designed increase the educational impact of Earth Day by creating a full week of educational preparation, learning, and activities in K-12 classrooms, nature centers, zoos, museums, and aquariums. ACT members may want to get involved locally by sharing this item with your education partners and teachers.

    New Forest Service Chief Gets Rough Treatment in Congress

    Washington, DC (February 14, 2007)- New Forest Service Chief Gail Kimbell received a less than gracious welcome Tuesday as she appeared before Congress for the first time as chief. Defending the president's spending request for the next budget year, Kimbell came under fire from all sides.

    Watershed 263 Project

    (Baltimore, Maryland) The Watershed 263 project (WS263) comprises a long-term effort to utilize urban forestry to improve water quality, revitalize inner-city neighborhoods and enhance quality of life in these communities. The project is a joint effort of Baltimore City Department of Public Works and Parks and People Foundation.
