Register for NeighborWoods Month 2008
National NeighborWoods Month is a united campaign to celebrate trees and raise awareness for the value of urban forests. During October, ACT member groups across the U.S. will engage thousands of volunteers in stewardship events and educational programs, communicating a shared message that trees are essential to the health and livability of communities.

 


   
 


SUCCESS STORY
Green Collar Training
D.C. Greenworks trains local at-risk young adults in urban landscape management and associated environmental best practices and helps place them in related jobs. Training programs use hands-on, project-based curricula that are designed to fit the needs of volunteer service corps, parks departments, nurseries and landscaping businesses in the area.

 


     
 


RESEARCH
Millions of US Workers Stand to Gain from Green Industries
Washington, DC (June 2008)- A report released by a coalition of conservation and labor groups claims that workers at every skill level will be in high demand and enjoy greater job security in those key industries essential to building a clean energy economy in America and fighting global warming. The report, "Job Opportunities for the Green Economy," takes a state-by-state look at existing jobs skills across a wide range of occupations and income levels.

PUBLIC POLICY
ACT Joins ServiceNation Organizing Committee
College Park, MD (Jun 10, 2008)- ServiceNation is a campaign for a new America... an America where citizens unite and take responsibility for the nation's future and restores the great tradition of citizen service. The campaign will officially launch with a ServiceNation Summit, September 11-12 in New York City. The ServiceNation Movement will launch with a national Day of Action on September 27, 2008.

Community Tree Leadership Forum
August 1-2 and August 8-9
In partnership with Arbor Day Foundation, USDA Forest Service, and California ReLeaf, the Alliance for Community Trees presents this fun and successful two-day training program focused on the needs of nonprofits, service groups, volunteer coordinators, and community organizers engaged in urban and community forestry.

 
   
 


FUNDING
National Park Service Rivers and Trails Grant- Deadline: Aug. 1
The National Park Service (NPS) Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program invites applications for requests for assistance. This program provides 1-2 years NPS staff time related to river restoration, community trail networks, or urban parks.
