Big Tree Pitches Ball at Portland Beavers Game
Portland, OR (May 1, 2008)- Esurance Insurance treated Friends of Trees staff to a suite at the Portland Beavers game. In the role of Big Tree, watch Rudy Dietz pitch the first ball over the plate. And in the role of Pinecone, see Brighton West race the Portland Beaver.

Neighborhood Trees Program
(Portland, OR)- Friends of Trees operates an extensive volunteer network that mobilizes approximately 2,000 people annually to plant and care for nearly 20,000 trees and shrubs in the Portland-Vancouver area. One such opportunity is the Neighborhood Trees Program.

 

     
 


RESEARCH
Why Shade Streets? The Unexpected Benefit
Davis, CA (November 1, 2007)- We would all prefer to walk down a tree-lined street to one without trees, but did you know that the street itself prefers to run under trees? This report examines the cost-saving benefits of having shaded streets. All other factors equal, the condition of pavement on tree-shaded streets is better than on unshaded streets. In fact, shaded roads require significantly less maintenance and can save up to 60% of repaving costs over 30 years.

Community Tree Leadership Forum
August 1-2 and August 8-9
The Alliance for Community Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, and California ReLeaf are teaming up to offer an intensive two-day training program focused on the needs of nonprofits, service groups, volunteer coordinators, and community organizers engaged in urban and community forestry. The trainings are designed to strengthen management and leadership skills.

 
   
 


FUNDING
EPA Water Sustainability Grants- Deadline: July 29
This program seeks to develop advanced concepts for linking public health protection with water infrastructure sustainability. The program supports innovative and integrative approaches for monitoring, modeling, operation, and management of drinking water distribution and storage systems and wastewater collection systems that can lead to improved water quality and reduced health risks.
