IN THE NEWS
Hurricane Gustav Highlights the Need for Storm Safety Landscaping
Baton Rouge, LA (September 5, 2008)- Hurricane Gustav came ashore west of New Orleans as
a Category 2 storm with winds of 110 MPH. Gustav was, by every account,
a high intensity storm that cut through Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and
Mississippi. The Alliance for Community Trees encourages a
region-wide dialogue about how city agencies and residents can work
together to implement stronger storm safety protocols that include
smart landscaping, storm-appropriate green infrastructure, and planting
the right tree in the right place.

SUCCESS STORY
Mayoral Forum
The venerable Pennsylvania
Horticultural Society has become an influential force for urban
forestry in Philadelphia. Founded in 1827, America's first
horticultural society leveraged the power of its members and other
environmental advocates to make greening issues a prominent item on the
public agenda during the city's 2007 mayoral race.

DC (July 1, 2008)- The Center for Watershed Protection has developed a

effective post-construction stormwater programs. The manual outlines
the major elements of a post-construction program, including the
relationship between local land-use decisions and stormwater
management. It also covers critical elements such as developing an
ordinance and design criteria, implementing a plan review process,
establishing a maintenance program, and tracking and evaluating the
program.
