Hurricane Gustav Highlights the Need for Storm Safety Landscaping
Baton Rouge, LA (September 5, 2008)- Hurricane Gustav came ashore west of New Orleans as a Category 2 storm with winds of 110 MPH. Gustav was, by every account, a high intensity storm that cut through Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The Alliance for Community Trees encourages a region-wide dialogue about how city agencies and residents can work together to implement stronger storm safety protocols that include smart landscaping, storm-appropriate green infrastructure, and planting the right tree in the right place.

Mayoral Forum
The venerable Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has become an influential force for urban forestry in Philadelphia. Founded in 1827, America's first horticultural society leveraged the power of its members and other environmental advocates to make greening issues a prominent item on the public agenda during the city's 2007 mayoral race.

 
   
     
 


RESEARCH
Managing Stormwater in Your Community: A Guide for Building an Effective Post-Construction Program
Washington, DC (July 1, 2008)- The Center for Watershed Protection has developed a new manual to assist Phase II communities in developing and building effective post-construction stormwater programs. The manual outlines the major elements of a post-construction program, including the relationship between local land-use decisions and stormwater management. It also covers critical elements such as developing an ordinance and design criteria, implementing a plan review process, establishing a maintenance program, and tracking and evaluating the program.

US Conference of Mayors Pass Resolutions in Support of UCF
Sacramento, CA (July 8, 2008)- At the US Conference of Mayors' summer meeting, Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo introduced two resolutions in support of urban forestry policy objectives. The Alliance for Community Trees is pleased to announce these resolutions, and thank Mayor Fargo for her continued work with ACT and support of urban forestry organizations around the country.

APWA International Congress & Exposition 2009
Call for Proposals- Deadline: September 30, 2008
American Public Works Association is now accepting speaker proposals for their 2009 International Congress & Exposition. Communities are encouraged to share their vision for the future of public works and real-world solutions to public works challenges. This is a great chance for ACT members to highlight local DPW partnerships in the areas of stormwater management, SmartGrowth, traffic engineering, green design, climate change, and more.
