Urban Landscaping- Part II: Tree Stock
July 16, 2009
1:00- 2:00pm EST

Millions of dollars are spent each year designing, implementing, and maintaining urban landscapes. Urban landscaping presents a variety of challenges, including physiological problems; working with municipalities; developing technologies for city use; and utilizing methods beyond field work to promote environmental care. Yet the quality of life benefits of proper urban landscaping are dramatic. By using sustainable landscape practices, cities and towns can avoid or reduce serious problems, in part by transforming their urban forests into major rainwater mitigation assets. Tree stock selection can play an important role in the long-term success of urban landscaping.

RESEARCH PERSPECTIVE
Jim Urban, JimUrban Associates (Annapolis, MD)
Jim Urban's work is constantly evolving the field of urban landscaping. A recent advancement that he is now pioneering is the Silva Cell, a modular, pre-engineered cell system designed specifically to meet the needs of water management soil and tree roots. The system is designed to create large spaces under the pavement, and the pavement is supported and protected from root damage by the cell structure.
