Energy Bill Adopted by House Without Trees Provision
Washington, DC (August 4, 2007)- The House passed a wide-ranging energy bill on Saturday that will require most utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar power. President Bush has vowed to veto the energy bill because it does nothing to encourage increased domestic production of oil and gas. The Energy Efficiency Through Trees legislation crafted by Rep. Doris O. Matsui was not introduced.

Spotlight Issue
Responsibile Climate Change Policies Include Trees
We all hear a great deal these days about global warming and its potential problems. While those in urban forestry have long known about that planting and caring for trees reduces CO2 and greenhouse gases, several stories have appeared recently in popular news outlets suggesting that trees are not a solution in the fight against global warming. While these pop-media pieces represent the views of a few researchers, an overwhelming body of peer-reviewed research from forest scientists around the world points to the importance of forests in reducing carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, and slowing the build-up of greenhouse gases. Fortunately, federal, state, and local leaders are emerging to help address this enormous threat.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO)
In bipartisan fashion, Rep. Ed Perlmutter recently announced his Green Office Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the public policy, research, and local business communities to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. On the premise that energy independence is good for national security, the climate, and jobs, Rep. Perlmutter is spearheading a dialogue about the links between affordable housing, finance, energy efficiency, and urban forestry.
