FOCUS EVENT
Philadelphia Celebrates NeighborWoods Month
(October 27) A pressing environmental health need for West and Southwest Philadelphia's neighborhoods is to restore the tree canopy, which ranges from 1% to 10%. Working with city agencies and community organizations, UC Green teaches neighbors how to become grassroots leaders who can drive revitalization in low-income communities by planting and caring for trees. In 2007, The Home Depot Foundation recognized Philadelphia as a winner of the Awards of Excellence in Community Trees.

LINK UP
Increase your visibility- link to the national effort
ACT provides many tools and resources to link your October events to NeighborWoods Month. Show that you are a NeighborWoods Month partner by displaying the logo, wrap a fun and colorful banner on your homepage, flier the town with customizable posters and door hangers. CanopySavannah Tree Foundation, and Trees Indiana are helping spread the word!

THINK OUTSIDE THE TREE
Mini-Grants help you reach further
RNeighbors used part of its mini-grant to pay two Somali and two Spanish interpreters to assist the organization in door-to-door canvassing. Using NeighborWoods Month door hangers, the multilingual outreach team successfully engaged many first-time volunteers they would not otherwise have been able to reach. The City of Denver used its mini-grant to purchase NeighborWoods Kids’ Activity Cards to use during their Mile High Million Grade School Tree Education and Planting. The October-long initiative is integrated into the fourth grade science curriculum at 20 Denver area schools and is part of Denver’s Million Trees program.
