FOREST SERVICE FY09 Budget
Urban and Community Forestry Program
Dear Friend of Trees:
Alliance for Community Trees is asking all of our members and partners
to take united action this year to reverse the drastic cuts proposed
for the Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program in FY
2009. The President's budget would virtually eliminate the
Urban
and Community Forestry Program, which provides funds to all states to
support technical and financial assistance to communities.
If you have ever received a grant or technical help from your state
forestry agency, you have benefitted from this important federal
investment. The proposed '09 budget would knock funding for
U&CF
down to a mere $5 million to be used nationwide. It sets the stage for
program elimination.
ACT is coordinating sign-ons for a letter that will be sent by the
Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition to all members of Congress. If your
organization would like to be included in the letter, which is
supported by 16 national organizations and over 40 local and state
organizations and cities, please
sign on by March 25.

here for more on how you can help in the coming month.
By working together in a united voice, we were effective in reversing
cuts proposed last year. This year will be a bigger challenge. Please
schedule time to talk with, visit, and/or write your Senate and House
members in the next 5 weeks. March and April is prime time to impact
the outcome.
Sincerely,
Alice Ewen Walker
