NATIONAL NEWS
Modern Johnny Appleseed Greens
Baltimore
(Baltimore, MD)-
Last week, 51-year-old Baltimore resident Gene DeSantis
planted his 13,849th tree. He frequently works with local nonprofit
Parks & People Foundation, which vouches for the accuracy of
DeSantis's tree count. Gene also frequently volunteers with homeless
and seniors programs, and planted his first tree in 1977. Gene says
satisfaction comes from watching them grow: "Trees are like children to
me in a lot of ways."

LOCAL STORY
Louisville losing its big trees
(Louisville, KY)- Louisville's trees are
fighting a losing battle to storms, invasive pests, neglect and age -
and the mighty oaks, maples and ash that once towered over parkways,
neighborhood streets, parks and backyards are not being replaced.
Change may be coming, however, for the city's trees and its tree
lovers. Mayor Greg Fischer is about to give tree advocates what they
have sought since at least the mid-1990s: a tree advisory
board.
