Portland, OR (April 14, 2009)- Elm tree owners take note: No pruning will be allowed after Wednesday. The annual moratorium on pruning of the streets, in an effort to fight Dutch elm disease, will be in effect through Oct. 15. Pruning attracts elm bark beetles, which thrive on freshly cut wood. The bugs can carry the fungus that causes the highly contagious disease that’s capable of devastating populations of elms.
The moratorium applies to all elm varieties but Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that pruning is sometimes necessary for safety considerations. For more information, contact the Portland Urban Forestry Office at 503-823-4489.
