Great Tree Canopy Comeback Project Part of NeighborWoods Month Celebrations

Cultivate Diversity: Mix It Up for Healthy NeighborWoods
The Great Tree Canopy Comeback is a project that all citizens in the Fort Wayne area are invited to participate in. Trees Indiana will partner with Friends of the Park and the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department along with volunters and businesses in our area to purchase and plant new trees for our city parks. Over the last fifty years, our parks have lost close to 50% of the tree canopy due to weather and disease. The Great Tree Canopy Comeback is an effort to combat this critical loss of trees while giving our community an opportunity to help with a lasting gift to our city parks. Trees Indiana will also mobilize youth volunteers and provide educational events prior to the planting to help them recognize the many benefits of urban trees. Youth groups involved include Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, along with students from area schools. The parks selected are all neighborhood parks that have great historical significance for Fort Wayne. Following the plantings all volunteers are invited to attend the Indiana Michigan Power Picnic at Swinney Park. Participants will enjoy food and entertainment. Fort Wayne city officials join in the recognition of the volunteers and NeighborWoods month. All participants will receive a Great Tree Canopy Comeback t-shirt.

Date: November 1, 2008
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Fort Wayne Parks: Swinney, Rockhill, Moody, McCulloch, & Study/New Haven Parks; and Havenhurst/Allen County Parks: Fox Island.
Purpose: To celebrate the benefits of trees in the places people live. During National NeighborWoods Month, we want to share the message that planting and caring for trees adds value to our communities. Trees are not just a local concern but a national one as well. Your participation in National NeighborWoods Month not only enhances your community’s health, but also furthers our collective efforts to ensure that everyone gets to live in neighborhoods with trees.
Note: National NeighborWoods Month is part of the National NeighborWoods program, an initiative to re-green North American cities from coast to coast. The National NeighborWoods initiative is a program of the national Alliance for Community Trees in partnership with The Home Depot Foundation.
