Baton Rouge, LA (July 10, 2007)- The Friends of LSU Hilltop Arboretum, whose offices are on the grounds of the arboretum, was formed in 1982 with guidance from founder Emory Smith. It is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with LSU to maintain and enhance the property. It is committed to the preservation and development of Hilltop as a natural preserve of native southern trees, shrubs, and wildflowers and encourages its free and effective use by the community.
Friends of Hilltop provides volunteer services and financial support for the arboretum. Their volunteers and staff conduct guided tours, sponsor educational programs, and hold community events throughout the year, including the annual PlantFest! plant sale, garden tours in the Spring and Fall, a January Symposium, day trips to regional gardens of interest, and more.
