Salem, OR (February 11, 2009)- The Oregon Department of Forestry is selling off its only tree nursery. Spokesman Kevin Weeks said Monday that declining logging on national forests and increased availability of seedlings from private nurseries forced it to close last year.
D.L. Phipps Forest Nursery opened in 1957 near the Douglas County community of Elkton and at its peak produced 16 million seedlings a year. At the time, most seedlings for reforestation were produced on a contract basis, and the Phipps nursery was a place anyone could drive up and buy smaller lots.
The price is $2 million for 113 acres, most of it irrigated, with a cold-storage facility. An auction was held last January, but none of the bids met minimum specifications.
