Pittsburgh, PA (December 1, 2009)- They come from all walks of life, with a diversity of backgrounds, professions and community-service passions that speak to the richness that is young, professional Pittsburgh. This is our 11th annual 40 Under 40, a celebration of 40 inspirational, successful, generous men and women from our region, all under age 40, who represent the best in Pittsburgh’s present and future.

Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest is an environmentally focused nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing Pittsburgh’s vitality by restoring and protecting the urban forest through tree maintenance, planting, education and advocacy, says Matthew Erb. He works with community volunteers, called Tree Tenders, to plant and maintain trees in their neighborhoods. Their efforts are central to the TreeVitalize program, a citywide effort to plant 20,000 trees by 2012. “Trees provide numerous benefits, most obviously aesthetic, but also environmental, economic and social. Increasing awareness [and] planting and maintaining the trees that we have will ensure these benefits will be realized by future generations of Pittsburghers.”
