CSX joins near-southeast residents in planting 50 trees to transform gateway

Indianapolis, IN (May 22, 2010)- CSX Corporation, in partnership with Alliance for Community Trees, City Year, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful will plant 50 large trees and shrubs in an area city officials say is very much “in need of green.” The trees selected for planting, which include Serviceberry, Winter King Hawthorne, Northern Red Oak and Sugar Maple are all native and well adapted to the climate and soil conditions of Indiana.

City Year is a nonprofit AmeriCorps national service organization. Alliance for Community Trees and its local affiliates in 41 states and Canada have planted and cared for 14.9 million trees in cities with help from 4.3 million volunteers.

Where: Triangle Gateway, 335 Prospect Street, Indianapolis, IN 46225
Why: Triangle Gateway is part of an area Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) identified as a “hot spot” where newly planted trees would made the biggest difference, including improved air quality.
How: CSX Trees for Tracks is the railway’s promise to plant one tree for each mile of track (21,000) in its system. About 75 volunteers from the organizations will participate.
