San Francisco, CA (December 11, 2007)- Esurance, the direct-to-consumer personal car insurance company, announced its latest environmental initiative. In conjunction with its environmental partner Friends of Trees, Esurance will help plant trees and restore natural areas on the South Portland Riverbank on December 15, 2007.
The tree planting with Friends of Trees in Portland is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives that Esurance has supported in the Pacific Northwest. On November 10, Esurance sponsored Carbon Offset Day in Seattle, resulting in the planting of over 3,000 native plants and shrubs in a single day.
“Esurance is very proud to work with Friends of Trees in Portland,” stated Kristin Brewe, Esurance’s Director of Brand & Public Relations. “Trees and other greenery face some significant challenges in our urban environments, which is why Esurance has supported numerous urban forestry projects across the U.S. over the past several years. Friends of Trees does great work in the Portland-Vancouver area, and we’re happy to help with that.”
Although the Pacific Northwest is known for its vast expanse of trees and natural areas, urban forests throughout the U.S., particularly those in low income areas, are declining faster than they can be replanted. Community-focused efforts of organizations like Friends of Trees help combat our nation’s urban tree deficit, improving the quality of life in urban and suburban areas.
Commented Scott Fogarty, Executive Director of Friends of Trees, “Esurance’s support will help us continue Portland’s tradition of being a green city. With more Americans than ever before seeking ways to help safeguard our environment, it’s promising to see companies like Esurance dedicating resources to the tree planting programs of Friends of Trees and other worthwhile organizations.”
Esurance, a subsidiary of White Mountains Insurance Group, Ltd., provides personal car insurance direct to consumers online and through select online agents. Because of Esurance’s virtually paperless online customer experience, Esurance policyholders have saved thousands of trees since the company’s inception. In 2006, Esurance also planted over 20,000 trees through its support of urban reforestation programs. Esurance is committed to safeguarding the environment, through its own operational practices, including a hybrid claims fleet and carbon offset programs for its office locations. Esurance also supports a variety of environmental organizations across the United States. Esurance was an official U.S. sponsor of Live Earth, and is an ongoing partner of the SOS Campaign.
About Friends of Trees
Friends of Trees is a non-profit organization that inspires community stewardship by bringing people in the Portland-Vancouver area together to plant and care for city trees and urban natural areas. Members help Friends of Trees build stronger communities and restore the area’s urban forest. Since 1989, Friends of Trees has planted more than 340,000 trees and shrubs in the Portland-Vancouver area. With the help of thousands of volunteers, Friends of Trees has shown national leadership by increasing Portland’s tree canopy during the past three decades during a time when a dozen other major U.S. cities lost significant tree cover. Because of its accomplishments, the nonprofit has received several local and national awards during the past two years.
