Forest Service Appoints Assistant Director for Urban & Community Forestry

Washington, DC (July 16, 2010)- Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell has announced the selection of Jan Davis as the new Assistant Director for Urban & Community Forestry. Davis currently serves as the Planning and Forest Policy Coordinator and Stewardship Coordinator for the Texas Forest Service.

Ms. Davis served as co-lead for the national Redesign Implementation Council (RIC), a position she held until December of last year.  During her tenure with the RIC, they developed the new national model for State & Private Forestry Program delivery both within the Forest Service and within state forestry agencies around the country.  She played a key national leadership role with the preparation of the initial prototype for State Forest Resource Assessments.  All 59 States and Territories just recently completed their Assessments based on her work.

In addition to her leadership experience, Davis comes with a solid background in all State & Private Forestry programs including, Urban & Community Forestry, Forest Stewardship, Forest Legacy, Environmental Education and Forest Health, as well as Forest Policy and Planning at both the State and National levels. She is known for her ability to form both state and national partnerships as well as strong alliances with non-traditional partners.

Ms. Davis is a 17-year veteran of the Texas Forest Service.  She spent her first 9 years within their Urban & Community Forestry Office in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, working with Tree City USA programs and forest health issues.  At the same time, she taught Arboriculture and other natural resource classes as part of the Horticulture Department at Tarrant County College.

Most recently, as part of the Texas A&M University system, Davis coordinated and drafted the Texas Forest Service 2010-2015 Strategic Plan and the Texas Statewide Forest  Resource Strategy. Jan was elected as the Society of American Foresters (SAF) District XI Council Rep (TX, MS, LA) 2007-2010.  She assisted with drafting and coordinating SAF’s 2010-2015 Strategic Plan and was the 2005 National Convention Program Chair.
