ANSI Standards for Tree Care Under Review

College Park, MD (January 9, 2012)- ACTrees members are invited to submit comments on revisions of the ANSI A300 national tree care standards. The period for public review is January 6 to February 5, 2012, for ANSI A300 Part 6– “Planting and Transplanting of Trees and Shrubs,” and January 6 to February 20, 2012, for ANSI A300 Part 7– “Integrated Vegetation Management.“

End of Year Message from ACTrees

Vibrant Cities & Urban Forests Report Released

College Park, MD (December 5, 2011)- The Vibrant Cities & Urban Forests report was officially released at last month’s Partners in Community Forestry Conference in Orlando, FL. Bringing together the observations and recommendations of 25 experts across multiple disciplines, the Vibrant Cities Report presents a new framework for understanding the benefits of urban and community forestry.

New ACTrees Member– Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy

Buffalo, NY (December 1, 2011)- The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is the first nonprofit organization in the nation to manage and operate an entire historic urban park system that consists of 1200 acres of beautifully designed parks, parkways and circles. BOPC is a not-for-profit, membership-based, community organization whose mission is to promote, preserve, restore, enhance, and maintain the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parks and parkways in the Greater Buffalo area for current and future generations.

New ACTrees Member– Keep Norfolk Beautiful

Norfolk, VA (December 1, 2011)- Keep Norfolk Beautiful (KNB) is a program of the Norfolk Environmental Commission and a branch of the City of Norfolk Department of Public Works. KNB’s mission is to lead citizens toward environmental stewardship and offers volunteer and community service opportunities through innovative programs.

Tampa Bay, FL (December 1, 2011)- Since 1989, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful (KTBB) has provided bay-area residents of all ages with opportunities for meaningful service. KTB’s mission is to provide environmental education and volunteer opportunities that develop individual responsibility and environmental stewardship. More simply, they foster personal inspiration through environmental motivation.

New ACTrees Member– Keep Orlando Beautiful

Orlando, FL (December 1, 2011)- Founded in 1987, Keep Orlando Beautiful, Inc. is a 501©3 nonprofit organization. The program is administered by the City of Orlando’s Streets and Stormwater Division of the Public Works Department. In their twenty-two year history, Keep Orlando Beautiful has accomplished many worthwhile projects to enhance Orlando including building a strong School Environmental Club program and numerous community cleanup and beautification events.

40,500 Trees Planted During 2011 National NeighborWoodsTM Month

College Park, MD (November 8, 2011)- More than 27,000 volunteers in cities across the country pitched in and got dirty to help plant 40,500 trees this October during 2011 National NeighborWoodsTM Month. Organized by Alliance for Community Trees and sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, TD Bank, and Boise ASPEN’s Project UP, National NeighborWoodsTM Month brings together local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and other partners to plant and maintain trees, and provide training and educational seminars.

Gene DeSantis: Baltimore’s unsung Johnny Appleseed

Baltimore, MD (October 24, 2011)
By Mark Reutter– Just two days ago, a thin, bespectacled 51-year-old patted down the final shovelful of dirt near a corner of Latrobe Park and entered into his book “13,849.” That’s the number of trees– maples, oak, cherry, dogwood, river birch, among others– that Gene DeSantis has planted in Baltimore.
