Vancouver (November 9, 2007)- More trees could be growing in Vancouver because of a $25,000 donation to Friends of Trees from The Home Depot Foundation. The foundation’s contribution will pay for an AmeriCorps member’s position and other expenses needed to boost the nonprofit’s profile in Vancouver and Clark County. Making more people aware of Friends of Trees and its partnership with Vancouver’s Urban Forestry office could mean more trees being planted.
Last year, Vancouver’s tree canopy was measured at 19.7 percent; Portland’s was 26 percent. The American Forests’ recommendation for urban areas is 40 percent. Friends of Trees was founded in Portland in 1989. Since then, the group has planted more than 340,000 trees and native shrubs in the Portland-Vancouver area.
