TreeUtah, in partnership with Salt Lake County’s Million Tree initiative, facilitates Discovering Trees with Carrie Cottonwood, a 2nd grade school outreach program for Salt Lake County public schools. The purpose of this position is to manage the program and educate grade school children on the benefits of trees.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Education Coordinator will be responsible for:
School Programs (85% of time):
• Present Discovering Trees with Carrie Cottonwood;
• Schedule 60 presentations for the 2012–13 school year;
• Correspond regularly with teachers and school administration, and keeping all correspondence materials up to date;
• Update Discovering Trees script and lessons as necessary;
• Develop curriculum as necessary;
• Facilitate Project Learning Tree workshops;
• Identify and implement best practices of other organizations with similar programs;
• Promote the program to Salt Lake County public schools through outreach to principals, teachers, families and the media;
• Create and disseminate information about the program including hand-outs and brochures;
• Evaluate program with teacher surveys, interviews and professional feedback;
• Develop a program evaluation and report on activities and goals quarterly.
Committees (5% of time):
• Represent TreeUtah on the Arbor Day Poster Contest Committee, Utah Society for Environmental Education Projects Steering Committee and Kids 4 Trees Committee.
Administrative (10% of time):
• Create and disseminate information about the program including hand-outs and brochures;
• Supervise education interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience working with children in an educational setting is required. Experience managing educational programs and developing curriculum is desired.
Other Skills:
• Experience developing and facilitating education programs in a school or field setting;
• Knowledge of teaching strategies and pedagogy;
• Exceptional classroom management skills;
• Knowledge of the Utah State Office of Education core curriculum;
• Experience in project planning including program development; implementation, and budgeting;
• Knowledgeable in the identification, biology, and care of trees, shrubs, and other plants;
• Strong interpersonal communication and public speaking skills;
• Must be enthusiastic, energetic, and have the ability to educate and interact, with both small children and professional adults, with humor;
• Ability to effectively supervise, train, evaluate and motivate staff and volunteers;
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint software as well as experience maintaining websites;
• Experience designing brochures and other programmatic and educational materials;
• Ability to work some weekends, holidays and special event hours as needed;
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and undertake moderately strenuous physical activities.
SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION:
The Education Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.
HOURS
30 hours/week, flexible schedule, some evenings and Saturdays. Contract review after six months. Contract extension will be based on available funding.
SALARY AND COMPENSATION
• $18,750 to $21,000 per year (depending on experience);
