American Public Health Week

April 2-8, 2007

National Public Health Week (NPHW) is an opportunity to attract media attention to health issues impacting your community. As you think about ways to promote the value of urban forests, this event may be an opportunity to highlight the human health benefits that trees provide, particularly regarding asthma and clean air.

Every year, the American Public Health Association (APHA) serves as the organizer of NPHW and develops a national campaign to educate the public, policy makers, and practitioners about an important public health issue. This year, communities across the nation will celebrate NPHW from April 2-8, 2007. Throughout NPHW, APHA will work with its 50,000 members and hundreds of organizational partners to encourage Americans to "Take the First Step" toward preparing effectively for public health threats.

NPHW 2007 will be dedicated to urging all Americans, especially the nation's most vulnerable populations, to "Take the First Step." APHA will focus on identifying unique barriers facing vulnerable populations and provide them with the resources they need to develop a tailored preparedness plan. APHA will create a series of tools and resources for five core audiences:

* Mothers with children;
* Local food banks;
* Hourly-wage workers and employers;
* Schools serving children in kindergarten through 12th grade; and
* Individuals with chronic health care needs.

Each day of NPHW will highlight the particular needs of one vulnerable population and feature activities and events that educate these individuals and organizations about how to take the first step toward getting prepared.

State and Local Partners
The success of NPHW depends on the energy of local partnerships which include organizations, Affiliates and state and local health departments across the country coming together to encourage Americans to "Take the First Step" toward preparing for a public health emergency.

State and local partners can expect visibility and participation in the following ways:

* Access to materials to help plan and implement activities.
* Access to materials that can be used at meetings and conferences to educate members about the campaign.
* Support where applicable in targeted markets to help implement NPHW campaigns around the issue of preparedness.
* The opportunity to conduct media outreach using approved campaign templates.
* Name and link on the NPHW web site
* Recognition in The Nation's Health

The success of NPHW will depend on the energy of our hundreds of organizational partners. For more and to complete the partnership forms, visit National Public Health Week or contact:
