It provides legal authority for defining municipal responsibility for public and private trees, conducting forestry programs, passing regulations, and setting minimum standards for management. The intersection of nonprofit community leaders, government agencies, and experienced land-use professionals is where effective tree ordinances, land preservation strategies, and environmental mitigation plans often begin to help ensure that their communities develop sustainably.

'Planning' Your Way to the Best Urban Forest

August 20, 2009
1:00-2:00pm EST
National Webcast

The physical framework of a community is called its infrastructure, and can be divided into two types: green and gray. Gray infrastructure refers to areas of buildings, roads, utilities, and parking lots; green infrastructure includes areas covered with trees, shrubs, and grass. A community can measure the size, shape, and location of its green infrastructure and accurately calculate the public utility functions these areas perform, although cities are only just starting to value green infrastructure for more than its beauty. For local public policymakers responsible for decisions affecting urbanization, the problem is not solely about getting the city or a developer to plant more trees, but rather one of balancing gray and green infrastructure.

Urban Landscaping- Part II: Tree Stock

July 16, 2009
1:00-2:00pm EST
National Webcast

Millions of dollars are spent each year designing, implementing, and maintaining urban landscapes. Urban landscaping presents unique challenges such as the physiological problem of plants growing in urban environments, working with municipalities to assess and manage their green infrastructure, developing technologies appropriate for city use, and caring for the environment through not only field work but also publications, websites, face-to-face meetings, and conferences. Yet the quality of life benefits of proper urban landscaping are dramatic. Problems can be avoided or reduced by utilizing sustainable landscape practices. By using BMPs, cities and towns can transform the urban forest into a rainwater mitigation asset and enable large tree growth. Tree stock selection goes a long way towards the long-term health and success of urban trees. Whether balled and burlap, containerized, or bareroot, it's the roots that suffer when trees are transplanted.

Trees are essential to the health and livability of our nation's cities and towns. Cleaner air, greener streets, and healthier neighborhoods are crucial to the prosperity of the American economy. But lasting progress won't come without changes in domestic policy. Now is the time to harness the momentum of a new Congress and a new administration. In response, the Alliance for Community Trees organized the first annual Green Infrastructure Summit and Urban Trees Forum. The two days of Hill meetings and discussions took place at The Methodist Building on Capitol Hill. Presentations, recordings, and downloadable resources are now available.

Managing Water Resources and Development in a Changing Climate

May 4-6, 2009
Anchorage, AK

Public and scientific awareness of changing climate conditions is increasing each year. These changes represent themselves in many ways: more frequent and extreme weather events, droughts in the southeastern and western states, potential for increasing flooding and coastal erosion damage, increasing irrigation and depletion of aquifers, and melting permafrost and reductions in arctic sea ice in Alaska. Understanding these changes and related management challenges is an increased focus for water resources professionals. Sustaining current communities, while allowing for continued economic development will require continued advancements in water-resource understanding, conservation, water-use practices, and improved management approaches. Education across all levels will be needed to move communities forward to help develop and implement sustainable water-resources development.

The Councils may do this by hosting conferences and workshops across the state for training and networking opportunities, promoting the benefits of urban forest management and healthy community forests to the general public, and educating elected officials and decision-makers about important issues affecting the future of trees in the state. Additional programming may include basic tree care workshops, publications, awards, and landmark or historic tree registry.

Marketing & Communications- Part IV: Advertising & Promoting Tree Events

January 15, 2009
National Webcast

All nonprofits operate in a very competitive marketplace. Urban forestry groups face competition from other tree, park, and conservation causes, but there is far greater competition from other sources. The most staggering competition you face is from the nearly 1,500 advertising messages bombarding the average adult daily. Urban forestry groups face very specific challenges in getting public recognition: the use of jargon-heavy technical language, limited budgets, and the reality that less than 7% of all donated dollars are contributed to environmental causes. Marketing can be a blueprint for recruiting volunteers interested in the environment. It can increase media coverage for your tree-planting events or let people know how urban forestry helps us every day.

Marketing & Communications- Part III: Building & Positioning Your Brand

A brand is a mixture of attributes, tangible and intangible, symbolized in a trademark, which, if managed properly, creates value and influence. Marketing a brand is not a new brochure, a printing budget, direct mail, or a catchy slogan. It is an important strategy to help community groups define their value and services in the marketplace. Pretty brochures, zippy websites, and catchy slogans can be effective, but only when part of a coordinated marketing effort. After all, the goal of marketing your urban forestry program is to achieve real results.

Marketing & Communications- Part II: Strategy & Public Relations

November 20, 2008
National Webcast

Nonprofit marketing can be thought of as exchanges of one value for another. Instead of exchanging $2.00 for a meal deal, nonprofits exchange critical community programs for funding or referrals, knowledge and information for community support and recognition, or a feeling of good will for donations. Typically nonprofits waste valuable resources and opportunities in substituting promotion activities for marketing strategy. A good urban forestry marketing plan can leverage even a minimal marketing budget to effectively focus on county legislators, a specific neighborhood, or a specific zip code- not the general public. A target audience of soccer moms may want to know how trees help improve their property values, while business owners may want to know about economic impacts of trees.

Marketing & Communications- Part I: Marketing 101

October 16, 2008
National Webcast

In the commercial business world of selling hamburgers, long-distance phone services, and other consumer goods, the most common definition of marketing is: product, price, and distribution. In other words, marketing defines the specific product or service being offered, establishes the pricing strategy, and identifies the channels of distribution to get the product to the right consumers. Conservation groups are not in the hamburger business, but they do offer specific services to a targeted audience. Translating that into the tree world, marketing is a series of strategic activities or decisions to create value in the mind of a specific customer. For most tree groups the focus is social marketing- influencing perceptions and awareness of specific audiences.

Partnering with Utility Companies to Plant Trees

January 17, 2008

Needless to say, the utility sector is a major focus of climate change and energy security discussions. If you think that markets, incentives, and entrepreneurs are the answer to energy efficiency, then the partnership between tree organizations and utility companies makes sense. Trees reduce ground level ozone and clean CO2 from the air while providing shade and ultimately cutting energy usage by up to 30%. Trees also cool cities by 10-20 degrees, helping cities to meet air quality standards for federal highway dollars.
