GreenWorks! Grant Program

Deadline: April 30 or October 31, 2007

GreenWorks! is the service-learning, community action program of Project Learning Tree (PLT) that partners PLT educators, students, and communities in environmental neighborhood improvement projects. GreenWorks! blends service activities with the academic curriculum and addresses real community needs as students learn through active engagement.

GreenWorks! environmental action projects link classroom learning and the real world. By combining the environmental knowledge and resources of PLT with community action initiatives, GreenWorks! action projects make a difference in how young people think, in their sense of responsibility toward their communities, and in their understanding of their relationship to the environment.

GreenWorks! projects should address an environmental issue and involve students from pre-school to high school in hands-on community action. The GreenWorks! program also encourages participants to form partnerships with groups, businesses, or organizations within their communities to help implement and sustain their GreenWorks! projects. Some examples of past grant projects include habitat restoration, watershed improvement, outdoor classrooms, and energy conservation. PLT provides a guidebook with practical pointers for getting a GreenWorks! project off and running. You can also apply for a GreenWorks! grant to help get you started on your project.

Proposal requirements include:
1) Applicant must have received training in PLT.
2) Youth must implement the project.
3) The project must integrate student learning and community service.
4) The project must include at least one community partner, such as a local organization or business.
5) The project must acquire 50% matching funds.
6) Involve increased numbers of students, classes, youth organizations, and community partners.
7) Include a plan to administer a Project Learning Tree professional development workshop for the staff of the school(s) or organization(s) sponsoring the proposal.

Grants are for $250 to $5,000 and must be completed in one years' time.
