NRPA Achieve Healthy Communities Grant

Deadline: January 9, 2009

During the week of December 1, 2008, the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) will invite public park and recreation agencies to submit applications to become ACHIEVE Healthy Communities demonstration sites. NRPA, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), plans to award $30,000 each to 10 public park and recreation agencies.

The award will be used over the course of one year to help 10 park and recreation agencies to affect significant change in their communities by working with local government organizations to implement a coordinated chronic disease prevention and health and wellness program. The grant will also assist NRPA in developing online education and training modules that can be accessed by all local park and recreation agencies.

The goals of the grant are to:

1) Build or strengthen a local coalition of community stakeholders/partners

2) Develop a community action plan to address chronic disease risk factors such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use at the policy, systems, and environmental change levels.

Applicants will be asked to submit an application, a proposal addressing the criteria for selection, and three letters of support from community partners. The application will be available in the first week of December 2008. It is important to note that only Step Up to Health agencies can apply, however the process to become a Step Up to Health agency is straightforward.

Selection of the park and recreation agencies will be based on such key criteria as rates of chronic diseases, overall community demographics and geography. Funded agencies will be notified in March 2009.
