Operation Green Plant- Free Seeds
Deadline: Rolling
2005-2006 marked the 40th Anniversary of the America the Beautiful Fund and the 25th year of the Operation Green Plant Program, which has provided free seeds to: save more than 800 tons of seeds and 7 million flower bulbs from going to waste in landfills (free plant seeds), grow 1.75 billion pounds of food for the hungry (free vegetable seeds), and beautify roadways, parks and neighborhoods in 20,000 communities in all 50 states (free flower seeds). Now they invite you to join in the America the Beautiful Fund dream by making your own community more beautiful.
America the Beautiful Fund is offering grants of free seeds to community groups striving to better our world through gardening, grow fresh nutritious food for the hungry, teach children about the wonders of nature in a habitat garden, beautify parks, roadways and neighborhoods, and promote environmental stewardship in your community. There are a thousand ways to improve your community's quality of life through gardening.
Grants of 100 to 1,000 seed packets are being offered on the basis of availability and relative need. Seeds have germination rates of 90-95 percent. America the Beautiful Fund is also offering The Green Earth Guide containing illustrated gardening instructions and ideas on involving the whole community in your project. For nutritional information, harvesting, storage and eating tips we offer Gardening for Optimal Nutrition.
Also for the first time, they are supplying groups with gloves thanks to a generous donation from Wells-Lamont. Now you can really dig in! With an annual Membership contribution you will also have access to technical assistance via a toll free member hotline and newsletters and announcements of special events and grants.
