Children's Education Specialist, U.S. Botanic Garden (Washington, DC)

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG), Public Programs Division. The incumbent serves as the primary planner, developer and implementer of lectures, thematic tours, conferences and workshops and other formal and informal educational programs families, youth, children and teachers. Develops and coordinates weekend, evening and holiday programs that provide education, engagement and inspiration on botany and the importance of plants.
More specifically, the incumbent develops formal and informal programs and activities for classroom and outdoor venues. Participates in the delivery of programs to USBG audiences in workshops, seminars, delivery carts and festivals. Practices and models inquiry- and object-based learning. Conducts teacher training on plant science and botany education.
Participates in agency operational or planning meetings, public briefings or other formal or informal settings where the incumbent publicizes educational program accomplishments and solicits resources or other forms of support and cooperation necessary to ensure program success. Develops collaborative relationships that benefit USBG programs.
Assists with the development of strategies for effective communication of program information. Develops exciting and innovative programs and stories about plants, observing plants, and children's programming associated with exhibits. Delivers programming creatively to visitors on a daily basis in formal and informal settings.
Works to ensure the promotion of the agency's views in respect to current and emerging policy issues. Arranges for consultants or program experts to work with the staff; writes website content; cell phone tours, brochures, signs, handouts and other informative materials. Works with USBG and AOC staff to publicize youth and family programs.
