Director of Forest Health Protection, The Nature Conservancy (Arlington, VA)

The Director of Forest Health Protection oversees all aspects of the Conservancy's efforts to prevent introduction of and reduce damage from forest pests and pathogens in North America. The Director establishes overall conservation priorities and serves as the principal contact to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, foundations, the academic community, and the media.

S/he negotiates complex arrangements with government entities and other partners. The Director plays a leading role in identifying donors and granting agencies, securing funds, and stewarding funds received. Along with staff and a set of contractors, the Director works to improve and implement outreach efforts and government policies that will prevent pest and pathogen introductions and slow the spread/reduce the damage of those that are established. S/he supervises staff based in a range of locations and manages multiple grants and contracts. The Director helps to lead the Continental Dialogue on Non-native Forest Insects and Diseases to involve its wide range of stakeholders and expand the audience working to reduce the threat of pests and pathogens.

With other Conservancy scientists, academic institutions, and state and federal agencies, s/he identifies and applies innovative scientific methods to control pests and pathogens, and measures the success of those efforts. The Director considers the changing nature of the pest and pathogens threat, measuring the success of strategies and adapting current strategies as needed to make the most efficient and effective use of donor funding.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* BA/BS degree and 10 years experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Experience with multiple aspects of grant-writing or private fundraising
* Experience directing a major program of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams
* Experience working with current trends and practices in forest conservation and forest pests and pathogens
* Experience in partnership development including government, non-profit, and business partners; experience with high-level conservation contacts
