Director of Geographic Resources, Casey Trees (Washington, DC)

Casey Trees seeks to hire a Director of Geographic Resources to manage this department's many projects and staff. The primary role of this position is to lead the Geographic Resources programs including the Trees Count inventories, the online Casey Trees interactive map, the DC Trees Geodatabase and the environmental and economic modeling of the benefits of trees , mapping and analysis for the organization. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in ESRI's suite of ArcGIS, has proven management experience and is an enthusiastic, highly motivated, independent worker with a broad range of other technical skills as well as an interest in the conservation mission of the organization.

Geographic Resources Department at Casey Trees current projects include:
* Tree Inventory partnerships with the Smithsonian, Fort McNair, Dupont Circle and other community groups. The goal of these partnerships is to create tree management plans and raise awareness of the benefits of trees in the city.
* Online tree resources using ArcGIS Server and the iTree Suite. The Casey Trees Map developed in 2009 provides current information of trees planted by Casey Trees and all inventoried DC trees.
* Casey Trees Tree Database Management system using tracking all the trees planted by the organization using ArcGIS.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Oversee the Trees Count inventory program enhancement and implementation (ArcGIS, ArcMobile)
* Oversee citywide inventories including iTree models and tree mortality studies
* Oversee the implementation of all facets of GIS within the organization including mapping support for tree plantings, regreening programs
* Develop regreening strategies using innovative spatial modeling techniques (Spatial Analyst/Model Builder)
* Maintain and Update Casey Trees Interactive Tree Map Website
* Manage the Tree Planting and Maintenance Field Collection Tablet Program
* Manage data analysis to increase the awareness of the benefits of trees using the latest technology for modeling urban forest environmental and economic values
* Manage Geographic Resources Program Budget of ~ $220,000
* Research and manage grant opportunities to increase program development (ESRI's Conservation GIS, DDOE)
* Manage staff including full time GIS Specialist and part time IT Technician and interns
* Participate in DCGIS Steering Committee to collaborate with DC GIS partners in new technology and models
* Liaise with key partners such as local ESRI office and other GIS partners

QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree in related field and five year or more years of demonstrated academic or professional experience in geographic information systems (GIS)
* Extensive experience managing individuals, groups and /or coordinating events
* Advanced proficiency in ESRI's ArcGIS, MS Office a must
* Highly desired: some experience programming in ArcObjects, VB, VBA, or Flex and experience designing with the Adobe suite (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator)
* Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced office environment
* Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
* An interest in and commitment to urban conservation and community forestry activities

REPORTS TO: Deputy Director

MANAGES: GIS Specialist, IT Support Specialist, Inventory Team Leaders and GIS interns

POSITION DURATION AND COMPENSATION
This is a full time year round position with a starting salary of $60,000+ (based on experience) in addition to a full benefit package.
