Neighborhood Trees Specialist, Friends of Trees (Portland, OR)

Friends of Trees seeks a Neighborhood Trees Specialist to implement community-based, neighborhood street tree planting projects in collaboration with Volunteer Neighborhood Coordinators, Neighborhood Associations and other partner groups in accordance with Friends of Trees' mission.   

QUALIFICATIONS
Strong job candidates will be:
* Well organized with excellent time management skills.
* Skilled in collaboration and teamwork.
* Experienced in supervising others and working with a wide range of volunteers.
* Skilled in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and ArcGIS.
* Knowledgeable of trees and gardening (useful, but not required).
* Positive, flexible attitude and sense of humor.
* Have the ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and do hard physical work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
* Have a desire to work both outdoors and in an office environment.
* Have excellent customer service skills.
 
NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECTS
* Initiates and conducts neighborhood street tree planting projects.
* Works with and trains neighborhood coordinators in organizing and conducting plantings.
* Coordinates and oversees weekend neighborhood plantings and represents Friends of Trees at such plantings, including public speaking and media interviews.
* Provides neighborhood coordinators with a planting guide and standardized forms and materials to assist them with their neighborhood projects.
*  Establishes, orders, maintains a tree inventory for neighborhood plantings in coordination with the tree selection committee.
* Maintains data on street tree plantings and survival rates.
* Acknowledges sponsors as required by sponsorship agreements.
* Participates in efforts to raise funds for NT program.
* Effectively manages active NT grants.
* Orients, trains and supervises NT volunteers.  Assists with recruiting volunteers.
* Assures documentation of NT volunteer participation.
 
BRANCHING OUT
* Coordinates Fruit Tree Giveaways.
* Coordinate and staff Outreach events to sign up tree purchasers and Crew Leaders.
 
CREW LEADER TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
* Trains volunteer crew leaders in tree planting techniques.
* Maintains quality control at planting projects.
* Assists in maintaining up to date information on crew leaders in the database.
* Assigns crew leaders to assist at plantings.
 
ADMINISTRATION
* Maintains records of incoming tree fees and keep track of all monies received by neighborhoods.
* Bills for planting projects and collects payment.
* Assists other planting staff in maintaining and ordering all tree planting supplies.
* Maintains inventory of tree brochures and all informational literature.
* Participates in efforts to improve program and organizational effectiveness and efficiency.
* Maintains and updates e-commerce system to sell NT trees.
 
TREE MAINTENANCE
* Assists in training Summer Inspector volunteers to do street tree health checkups.
* Maintains records regarding Summer Inspector findings and maintains database.
* Assists in recruiting and assigning arborists to check on ailing trees.
* Works with Urban Forestry to develop classes on tree pruning and health.
* Limited watering and pruning during summer months.
 
GENERAL STAFF DUTIES
* Attends staff meetings and retreats; reporting on status of Neighborhood Trees program.
* Submits accurate record of time and expenses to office manager at end of month.
* Helps keep office workspace, tools, tool room and work vehicles in good condition.
* Participates in fundraising for Friends of Trees general funds (i.e. phone banks, events etc.)  
* Contribute monthly to Friends of Trees blog.
* And other duties as assigned.
 
Salary:   33,000-37,000/year
Benefits eligibility: Eligible for full benefits
Hours:   Fairly flexible, establishes schedule and makes changes known
