Planning Associate, Casey Trees (Washington, DC)

Casey Trees, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring, enhancing and protecting the tree canopy of Washington, D.C., seeks a Planning Associate to help integrate tree canopy restoration, enhancement and protection measures into District plans and projects. Duties include attending planning meetings, helping to define community based tree canopy goals, drafting public comment and tracking land use changes and development patterns that impact D.C.'s tree canopy.

RESPONSIBILITIES
* Track real estate developments and planning projects to maintain and regularly update the organization's Development Tracker.
* Assist and lead community master planning projects.
* Research and draft reports on local ordinances and policies that impact the protection of the urban tree canopy.
* Help develop and formalize tree planning advocacy efforts. Work with ANC Commissioners and other local leaders to encourage tree canopy awareness and planning at the neighborhood scale.
* Attend public community planning, master planning and visioning meetings and encourage participants to incorporate better tree spaces and tree protection into planning initiatives.
* Draft public comments related to D.C. plans and projects as they relate to the City's tree canopy.
* Assist in developing training programs and informational workshops for professionals involved in planning, land and community development. This includes helping lead tours of Casey Trees' Sustainable Site Initiative Pilot Project features.

QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree in urban, environmental, or community planning or related field; or 2 years experience in planning. Masters degree and/or AICP certification is a plus.
* Experience with public participation is required; experience in leading charrettes or similar public input forums is preferred.
* Community master planning or comprehensive planning experience.
* A commitment to Casey Trees' mission and a passion for and commitment to urban, community and sustainable planning.
* Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is essential; experience with GIS and other mapping tools is preferred.

POSITION DURATION AND COMPENSATION
This position is full-time and starts on or after July 18. Starting salary range is $40,000 - $45,000 commensurate with experience, benefits included.
