Urban Forestry Instructor, Casey Trees (Washington, DC)

The mission of Casey Trees is to restore, enhance and protect the tree canopy of the Nation's Capital. Casey Trees is looking for an Urban Forestry Instructor to work with the Director of Education developing and implementing our training programs and consulting the public regarding their arborist concerns. Duties include: facilitating Education classes, leading tree walks, training staff and volunteers on the most up to date arborist research, and inventorying trees for hazard tree assessment.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, enthusiastic, highly motivated individual, loves working with people, and is dedicated to urban and community forestry. The candidates should possess a broad range of technical urban forestry skills, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and a genuine interest in the conservation mission of the organization.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Facilitate all educational classes and tree walks
* Assist in developing content for classroom and internet course offerings.
* Lead tree walks and assist in developing online tree walks.
* Develop and conduct a consulting Arborist program for the public on general tree care and health questions
* Conduct Hazard Tree assessments in conjunction with the Casey Trees Community Tree Inventory program.
* Keep up to date on the best practices on tree care.

QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree in arboriculture, horticulture, urban forestry, landscape management or related field, and two or more years of experience required. Master's degree preferred.
* Experience in teaching and conducting classes.
* A passion for and commitment to urban and community forestry.
* Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced non-profit environment.
* Proficiency with MS Office including MS Word, Outlook and Excel are essential.
* Experience with tree planting and landscape operations, tree stock type and sizes, tree selection, nursery operations, and ANSI standards are essential.
* ISA certification or ability to acquire within the first year of employment.
* Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to a drive pickup truck with an 18-foot trailer.

POSITION DURATION AND COMPENSATION
This is a full time year round position starting on or after January 3rd, 2011, with benefits, paid holidays, a uniform allowance, and a starting salary range of $40,000 - $45,000 (commensurate with experience).
