Youth Tree Team Coordinator, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (Indianapolis, IN)

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful seeks a Youth Tree Team Coordinator to develop, manage, and monitor the activities of KIB's Youth Tree Team program.

The Youth Tree Team (YTT) consists of eight teams each comprised of 8 youth and 2 adult leaders. The core YTT program is a ten week long summer program. Youth work Monday through Thursday, 20 hours per week, either in the morning or afternoon. Youth Tree Teams work three days watering trees, as well as performing other tree maintenance activities. One day each week is spent on enrichment activities such as networking with green collar professionals, learning life and job skills, and exploring the natural environment. Teams also work on weekends (and possibility week nights) in the spring and fall.

In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the YTT, the YTT Coordinator will work with the NeighborWoods program to organize and lead tree plantings. Neighborhood tree plantings include designing the planting, obtaining permits, demonstrating the correct way to plant and care for trees, and supervising the tree installation.

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinate the activities of the year-round Youth Tree Team program.
2. Working with youth employees and volunteers, lead tree plantings, with the goal of leading a tree planting each Saturday in the spring and fall.
3. Develop and implement plans, strategies and programs to use YTT to water and plant trees.
4. Manage the recruiting process for the summer YTT program.
5. Coordinate enrichment activities for youth.
6. Coordinate contracts for rental vans and any other needed equipment.
7. Develop YTT budget and monitor expenditures.
8. Develop YTT schedule and monitor time tracking.
9. Assign job duties to YTT leaders and teams and monitor task completion.
10. Evaluate the performance of the YTT leaders, and assist the YTT leaders in evaluating the performance of the youth.
11. Coordinate YTT activities with other divisions/departments, such as NeighborWoods.
12. Attend weekly staff meetings and tree team meetings.
13. Work with Development Dept. to coordinate funding opportunities.
14. Attend meetings and speak as KIB's YTT representative in outreach activities.
15. Compile and calculate data/information for in-kind, financial and fundraising reports.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Candidates must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
* Skilled at engaging high school employees as well as adult employees and volunteers.
* Able to build rapport with youth and adult employees while keeping them accountable for job duties and employment policies.
* Sound judgment in managing employees and related employment situations.
* Calm demeanor and good decision making in stressful situations, such as medical emergencies.
* Able to engage and manage large crowds of people.
* Interested and able to work in the outdoors on a regular basis.
* Familiar with (or willing to learn about) plants commonly found in Indianapolis.
* Capable of using arboricultural tools, such as shovels, pick-axes, rakes, knives, saws, loppers, post-pounders, etc.
* Proficient at commonly used office software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook email, etc.
* Able to lead employees in daily exercises and calisthenics.
* Able to carry 40 pounds in each hand (simultaneously) while walking for more than 300 ft. several times a day.
* Able to lift containerized trees on a frequent basis.

Characteristics of a Strong Candidate:
Initiative, self-motivation, attention to detail, highly organized, concern for workplace safety, love of the outdoors, professionalism.

Education and/or equivalent experience:
Bachelor's degree or related education, plus four years of work experience, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity. Strong candidates will have experience working with youth and experience working outdoors.

Licenses or certifications required:
Valid U.S. Driver's License.

Work days/ Hours:
Job schedule varies with season. Job will require weekday, weeknight, and weekend hours according to season.

Salary:
Commensurate with experience
