DC Greenworks is a social-environmental enterprise, which provides training and advocacy in environmentally beneficial building technologies, with an emphasis on vegetated green roofing. Founded in 1994, they focus on local environmental advocacy as well as implementation of low impact development projects that benefit communities across the national capital region. The organization is enjoying significant growth in what has become a very visible field.
In the last 16 months, the organization has improved on it's already strong relationship with the city, launched a vibrant website, developed a pipeline of green roof installations, organized and run a large summer youth employment program, put in place a first rate and very dedicated staff, and is in the strongest financial condition in its 15 year history.
The ED will oversee a staff of 6-10, including seasonal hiring, volunteers, and interns and report directly to the Board of Directors. A passion for green roofs and low impact development is essential. The ED will be responsible for the general management of the organization, including the following activities:
* Interact on a daily basis with existing and potential green roof customers, providing guidance and coordination on many technical issues related to green roofs, rain gardens, rain barrels, etc
* Develop strong relationships with developers, construction companies, larger landscaping companies, and other potential partners for development of both our green roofing operations and job placement opportunities for our graduating "apprentices"
* Work with local, regional, and federal jurisdictions to develop public policies and programs that promote stewardship of our city's environmental assets and waterways
* Actively promote green roofing generally through participation in civic organizations, industry associations, and community events. This will involve occasional commitments on nights and/or weekends.
* Build and maintain relationships with our supporters and donors. This includes hosting one spring and one fall fundraiser at green roof installation sites as well as active donor solicitation.
* Oversee the day-to-day finances of the organization. Prepare budgets and financial reports for the Board of Directors.
* Develop and regularly update plans for the strategic direction and growth of the organization
* Work with outside consultants and the Board to prepare proposals for grant funding
* Prepare biweekly reports to the Board of Directors, and meet with the Board at regular intervals.
This position is full-time, with some work on nights and weekends. Hours will vary, with the expected starting time to be early (e.g. 7 AM) during active installations and work until late (e.g.10 PM) on nights of important events and networking opportunities, but otherwise following more standard business hours.
Key requirements for this position are as follows:
* Meaningful experience in construction and/or landscaping
* Professional or volunteer experience in education, and preferably environmental or trade education
* Demonstrated ability to manage and evaluate finances and produce accurate reporting
* Strong organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
* Managerial experience, preferably having overseen direct reports
