Be a part of making a greener, greater NYC! New York City is entering an unprecedented period of growth and development as part of Mayor Bloomberg's PLANYC2030- the most sweeping plan to enhance New York's urban environment in the city's modern history. By 2017 we plan to plant an estimated 220,000 street trees with over $200 million in funding. Parks & Recreation is the steward of nearly 29,000 acres of land- 14 percent of New York City- from Yankee Stadium to Central Park to community Gardens and Greenstreets.
The City of New York seeks individuals with experience and interest in the Forestry and Horticulture field to perform advanced professional forestry functions. Schedule and supervise field surveys and inspections to assess the conditions of trees and the extent of damage from insects, injury and disease. Recommend solutions regarding species selection and site design. Assess work to be done by contractors for tree removal, tree pruning, tree planting, and related forestry contracts; supervise subordinate staff in the monitoring of contractors. Perform post-planting field inspections. Work with other agencies and divisions on tree preservation. Compile and manage street tree planting contracts. Inspect and tag trees at local nurseries. Respond to citizen inquiries and maintain working relationships with community boards, community groups, and officials within and outside the agency. Coordinate community-based greening efforts. Manage borough-wide tree database.
These positions are with the division of Central Forestry & Horticulture which manages citywide urban forestry initiatives including street tree planting and landscape enhancement contracts, education, stewardship and training programs, the creation of urban forest management plans for specific park properties through the New York Tree Trust program, and the Asian Longhorn Beetle eradication effort.
This is a full-time position with salary of $40,330. The City of New York is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Qualifications:
* A Master's Degree from an accredited university with specialization in Forestry or a related subject; or
* A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with specialization in Forestry or a related subject and one year of full time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work; or
* An associate degree from an accredited college and three years of experience in forestry or arboricultural work.
* Driver license valid in the State of New York.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience working with the public.
* Ability to work independently.
