MillionTrees Project- Free Oak Tree Saplings

Deadline: Rolling

Living Lands & Waters' (LL&W) MillionTrees Project began in 2007. The purpose of this project is to reestablish native, nut-bearing, hardwood trees along waterways and within our communities. Benefits of this project are to increase biodiversity, help reduce erosion and run-off, improve water and air quality, and provide shelter and a viable food source for wildlife and migratory birds.

Since the inception of the MillionTrees Project, LL&W has collected over 470,000 acorns from community volunteers throughout the Midwest. The seeds have been planted in LL&W's nursery in Beardstown, IL at the Cargill Pork Processing facility. They will grow for two years in the nursery before they are ready to be transplanted into their native communities and along shorelines of creeks, streams and rivers.

The first crop of trees will be ready this spring! LL&W will be handing out 100,000 oak trees to any interested groups or individuals, free of charge.

The majority of the seeds originated in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. They are from USDA hardiness Zone 5. Trees come bundled in groups of 25 or 50 depending on the size of the trees, and they will be boxed together with tags on each bundle marking the variety. The boxes are approximately 5 feet long by 1 foot tall and can easily fit into a pickup truck. They are 2 years old bare root seedlings and will range in size from 12" to 30", not including the roots.

The following tree saplings are available:
Burr Oak (Quercus Macrocarpa)
Red Oak (Quercus Rubra)
White (Quercus Alba)
Swamp White (Quercus Bicolor)
Pin (Quercus Palustris)
Black (Quercus Velutina)
