RWJF Grants Promote Local Health Collaborations

Deadline: July 7, 2009

Local Funding Partnerships (LFP)- a collaborative program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and local grantmakers- supports innovative, community-based projects throughout the United States. Through LFP, a local grantmaker proposes a funding partnership with RWJF to provide seed money for a new project that addresses the health or health care problems of people who are not reached by traditional health and social services or for whom existing services are insufficient.

Health PartnershipsProjects are expected to create meaningful change by addressing health in the context of complex social factors that impede good health for society's most vulnerable people. Programs that address access to medical care- such as the start-up of community health centers, mobile vans, dental services, or school-based health centers- also are not likely to be competitive.

LFP provides grants of $200,000 to $500,000 per project, which must be matched dollar for dollar by local grantmakers such as community foundations, family foundations, corporate funders, etc.

Crime Reduction
The collaborative is also offering special solicitations to partner with diversity focused funders: grantmakers and nonprofits who focus their funding on the needs of a specific under-resourced community of people such as communities of color; immigrants; people who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT); people isolated because of their racial, tribal or ethnic group and people who live in remote rural or frontier locations.

LFP special solicitations provide matching grants of between $50,000 and $200,000 per project. The grant will be paid out in increments over a period of up to three years. During that time, at least 75 percent of the award must be matched dollar for dollar by local grantmakers. In-kind contributions may be used to match up to 25 percent of the total award. The applicant organization must be nominated by a diversity focused funder, but over the life of the grant RWJF encourages multiple local funding partners to work together to help the project grow.
