Silviculture and Conservation Instructor, Baltimore City (Baltimore, MD)

Silviculture and Conservation Practices/Urban Natural Resources Management Camp is for Baltimore City youth, ages 14-18. The program will be offered during the summer (June-August). The program focuses on leadership development, job training and peer-to-peer mentoring with an emphasis on urban environmental issues and park conservation. Having youth learn and work in a safe environment, have positive interactions with their peers and adults and providing them with skills and knowledge they can use in the future are all goals of the Silviculture and Conservation Practices/Urban Natural Resources Management Camp.

Job Description:
Primary responsibilities include: training youth on the subject of silviculture and conservation practices in a classroom setting, and providing leadership for youth, providing supervision of youth during trainings and workdays and contributing ideas and activities to curriculum. Maintaining an engaging, safe and positive environment is key. Possible topics to be included in the curriculum: tree identification, tree maintenance, tree measurements, tree health, tree inventory, trail management, invasive species, water and air pollution, park management and tree planting and care.

Qualifications:
Applicants must be able to: conduct training in a classroom setting targeted at high school students, engage the students in planned activities, deal effectively with a large group of high school students and provide youth with guidance. Applicants must be able to work weekends and evenings and work in outdoor conditions.

Duration & Type of Appointment:
The Silviculture and Conservation Practices/Urban Natural Resources Management Camp - Instructor is a six weeks part-time (30 hours per week) position with the Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP) - Park Conservation and Community Outreach (PCCO) office. Employee will be compensated only for hours worked at a rate of $15.00 per hour. This position is Non-Civil Service and does not include the City of Baltimore's benefits package or paid leave/holidays.
