Urban Forest Researcher (Davis, CA)

The employee will perform work related to urban forest benefit-cost analysis, urban tree growth studies, technology transfer and development. The position is primarily office-based and entails use of office software and testing of urban forestry software applications. Occasional fieldwork will be conducted in urban settings. Research and technology transfer is conducted throughout the United States.

The employee will perform technology development and transfer tasks and must demonstrate skill in the use of office software applications (particularly Excel spreadsheet functions, including macro development, and word processing) and other technologies such as PDAs. He/she will assist with testing and deployment of computer tools such as i-Tree, Street Tree Simulator, and Tree Carbon Calculator. The incumbent will write regular news briefs describing CUFR activities, coordinate development and distribution of news releases with partners, and give occasional public presentations regarding CUFR research. He/she should have excellent writing and oral communication skills, and some experience in these areas.

The employee will perform a variety of duties focused primarily on data analysis including computations that require judgment and knowledge of the nature of the sources and use of the data. Analysis of experimental data requires performing statistical manipulations leading to basic conclusions and inferences and accurately summarizing the data. The incumbent will create charts, graphs, and/or reports using well-established specified procedures.

The applicant should have a Master's degree or equivalent work experience in urban forestry or a related field. Previous academic and/or professional experience in arboriculture and urban forestry or in a related field (e.g., urban hydrology, meteorology, environmental planning, landscape architecture) is desirable.

This is a 13 month term full-time position with extension possible up to 4 years, depending on funding. Salary will range from that for a GS-9 to GS-11 (about $40,000-50,000) plus benefits, depending on qualifications. The position will be located at the Center for Urban Forest Research in Davis, California (Yolo County).
