NeighborWoods Grants
NeighborWoods Challenge Grants in Support of Housing Partnerships for Sustainable Communities
The Alliance for Community Trees manages competitive pass-through grants funded by The Home Depot Foundation. Grants go to the community coalitions with the most innovative, promising approaches for using urban forestry to support strategic partnerships between urban forestry nonprofits and affordable housing providers.Grant-making goals are to:
2009 Grant Projects
- Produce tangible results that improve communities and urban forests
- Provide meaningful volunteer experiences for residents and community members
- Create local partnerships between urban forestry groups and affordable housing organizations
ACT’s vibrant member network continually enhances community quality of life by engaging citizens in the planting, care, and stewardship of their community trees. National NeighborWoods Grants™ recognize local urban forestry partnerships that contribute to community development in under-invested neighborhoods.
Applicants with an urban forestry mission and focus, sustained community presence, and record of tangible, on-the-ground achievements are preferred. Projects feature local partnerships between urban forestry and affordable housing that result in tangible, strategic improvements to the health and livability of the home environment of low-income families. Programs that are part of an ongoing NeighborWoods-branded program, create a sustaining NeighborWoods-branded program, or add value to affordable housing projects supported by The Home Depot and/or The Home Depot Foundation will be given special consideration.
Research has shown that trees can increase property values, promote main street revitalization, and contribute positively to children’s physical and mental health. NeighborWoods connects these benefits to communities in need, and inspires neighbors to take an active role in the health and management of their community forests.NeighborWoods is made possible by a generous contribution from The Home Depot Foundation. The Home Depot Foundation invests in nonprofit organizations that are in the business of building strong, healthy communities. See www.homedepotfoundation.org for more information.
