The Alliance for Community Trees manages competitive pass-through grants funded by The Home Depot Foundation. Grants go to the community coalitions with the most innovative, promising approaches for using urban forestry to grow stronger, healthier neighborhoods. Grant-making goals are to:

  • Produce tangible results that improve communities and urban forests
  • Provide meaningful volunteer experiences for residents and community members
  • Create local partnerships between urban forestry groups and community development organizations

ACT’s vibrant member network continually enhances community quality of life by engaging citizens in the planting, care, and stewardship of their community trees. National NeighborWoods Grants™ recognize local urban forestry partnerships that contribute to community development in under-invested neighborhoods.

Applicants with an urban forestry mission and focus, sustained community presence, and record of tangible, on-the-ground achievements are preferred. Projects feature a partnership between the grantee and a local KaBOOM! project, affiliate of YouthBuild USA, a community development corporation, an affordable housing organization, or other community-based group. Projects that enhance locations where The Home Depot volunteers have previously building playgrounds or constructed or rehabilitated affordable housing are highly desirable.

Research has shown that trees can increase property values, promote main street revitalization, and contribute positively to children’s physical and mental health. NeighborWoods connects these benefits to communities in need, and inspires neighbors to take an active role in the health and management of their community forests.
