In Partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo, California Lectures and the Sacramento Tree Foundation will present a community tree planting on the State Capitol grounds, honoring Prof. Maathai’s visit to Sacramento and her dedication to global environmental education. State and local elected official will be on hand with Mayor Heather Fargo to participate in the tree planting ceremony, welcoming Prof. Maathai with gifts from the State Capitol and City.
The Sacramento Tree Foundation will dedicate a valley oak, a native of the Sacramento region and known for its majestic arching canopy. Children ages 12 to 17 from St. Hope’s Academy and Sacramento High School will present a closing dedication for the ceremony. “Wangari’s emphasis on the importance of educating our youth about their environment is an important one,” says Ray Tretheway, executive director of the Sacramento Tree Foundation and Sacramento City Councilmember. The event will be at the State Capitol Ground (southeast side opposite the Rose Garden) from 12:30 to 1:30pm. The event is free and open to the community.
After the dedication, California Lectures presents the lecture, “An Evening with Wangari Maathai” at 7:30 pm. The lecture will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N Street, Sacramento. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Books available for purchase and book signing by Prof. Maathai.
